My new stash of books
Good afternoon fellow saloners; I just got back from my local library with a nice stash of books. It’s been years since I set foot in a library, as kids we used to go every Saturday but then I developed a taste for brand new books and started spending my hard earned cash on them instead. Since I’ve started using book mooch to swap my second hand books I’ve come to realise that it isn’t so bad to read a book that someone has read already - and it’s a much cheaper way to feed my addiction than buying new. The fact that I’ve accumulated 180 brand new books that currently sit unread on my shelf also makes me feel guilty about adding to the pile!
So a couple of weeks back I joined my local library via their website and reserved a copy of Coraline, and today I went in to collect it and to have a nosy around and see what else I could find. Here’s what’s in my stash:
- Coraline by Neil Gaiman - I’ve heard great things about this graphic novel and can’t wait to read it. I think I might save it for Halloween!
- Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs - I’m a bit fan of the tv series Bones and have been tempted by the Tempe Brennan books for some time. I’m not really a big crime reader though so I’ve never bought one. This one was sitting on the ‘new in’ shelf and I couldn’t resist. It has to be back within the week so I’ll be tackling this one later this afternoon.
- Just in Case by Meg Rosoff - I was browsing the YA shelf and came across this title; I have another Rosoff book on my wish list so I thought I’d give this a try.
- Nefertiti by Nick Drake - I’ve heard great things about this book from other book bloggers.
- Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen - I stated reading this on my iPhone a couple of weeks back. But while Stanza is a great app for the odd snatched ten minutes here and there it’s not condusive for long periods of reading. Hopefully I’ll get through the book a bit quicker now I have the ‘real thing’ in my hands!
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Attwood - this one actually came from Book Mooch; I want to read it as the bonus book for the Classic’s Challenge.
And there you have it; the books that came into my house today. What about you? Have you brought any new books into your house this week? What do you think of libraries? Is your local library a well stocked Aladdin’s cave? Let me know in the comments

I’ve not been to my local library for years, I used to use it (and my school library) all the time as a kid, but for me, reading a book I ‘own’ whether it be new or secondhand - is just so much better than reading a ‘borrowed’ book (much like eating fish and chips out of a newspaper or drinking Coca-Cola out of a glass bottle it is slightly irrational that it makes it better, but it does!
And anyway, I’m not so sure adding another source to increase the size of my TBR pile is such a good idea…

I visit my local library more than I do my local bookstore. I love being able to read a book and then take it back. But if I love a book then I’ll order it on paperbackswap or buy it.

Oh, how I love the library. It’s the only way to economically feed my addiction! I buy my very favorite authors, but we have an outstanding library where I live (God love the fiction buyer there)…I can put not-yet-released books on my list online, and I usually get them the day they come out. Gotta love that…

‘Just in Case’ is my favourite Meg Rosoff, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It will be interesting to see what you make of ‘Devil Bones’ if you have only meet Tempe through the television series. The two are very different and this is definitely not Reich’s best book.

On Re-Reading
Mrs S - You shock me on two counts. Firstly that a voracious reader like you has not been in a library for so long. I would have expected you to be in there almost daily. The second shock comes from the fact that your library is open on a Sunday. NONE of the libraries around me are open on a Sunday so you’ll have to consider that a bit of a luxury :o)
As for my library? Well it’s OK, it’s quite historical (Carnegie Library, Dunfermline - donated by the great Andrew Carnegie) but I’m afraid, after being spoiled library-wise with attending the University of St. Andrews (countless editions, albeit academic, housed in some of the oldest libraries in the UK), my local library is sadly a pale relation. That said the local library has, and does serve me well.
Good luck with the new batch. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts
Warmest
Robert

Oh, the joys of libraries! I rediscovered mine a few years back and have become an ardent fan. I use it mainly for expensive books that I’m not 100% sure I want to buy: graphic novels, brand new hardcovers, nonfiction titles and the like. It’s a wonderful resource.
The first thing I did when I moved to a new town back in August was get myself a library card. I was without internet for a few weeks, so I mostly used my card to get computer access at first. But, I’ve started to check out DVDs and comic books, things that I consum quickly and don’t feel like I get my money’s worth when I buy. I still like to buy books, but like you’ve I’ve been buying more and more used books rather than new. The books you got today all sound awesome!

Libraries, too, can be an addiction. I have more library cards than I do credit cards! I love being so close to both the Houston Public Library and the Harris County Public Library.

I loved going to the library. I go several times a week. I had to place a limit on how many books I check out. I tend to check out so many that I find myself renewing and renewing until I can’t renew anymore. So, I just had to be “strict” with myself to prevent returning unread books.
I still go to the bookstore and continue to buy books (I just counted the unread books on my bookshelves yesterday and it’s about 150). I go back and forth about buying versus checking them out. If it’s a book from a favorite author or a current series that I already own, then I will just buy it. If it’s a raved about book and the wait list is long at the library, then I’ll buy it too. Or if I’m just looking for something different to read, a pretty cover that attracts my eye… I’ve often left a bookstore and then head to the library to see what’s available there. I love both equally and find myself spending hours in both.
Claire, I’ve kind of fallen back into love with the library since we moved back to my hometown. There’s just something about a library, isn’t there?
I’ve seen two book bloggers review The Handmaid’s Tale lately, even though it’s an older book. It looks very good. I’ll look forward to your review.

I read “A Handmaid’s Tale” several years’ ago. It was chilling and thought-provoking. I hope you enjoy it.
I have been a big fan of libraries since childhood. Unlike many readers, I don’t feel a special attachment to the actual book; it is the words that are important to me. The only books I buy are reference books that I know I will want to use over and over, like knitting books or cookbooks.
Money is tight around here lately, so I’ve been trying not to buy any new books. I have been reading more books that I’ve gotten from publishers and going to the library - as you mentioned, it’s way more cost effective!

I love libraries! And since I can access the catalogue and reserve books through the net, it feels as though the entire library’s collection is my own

I have a weakness for brand new books too. I actually prefer new books to old ones!
The nearest library to my home would be my university’s but there are mostly academic books there. They do have a decent collection of fiction books but I rarely visit that section. Hmm, perhaps during the holidays!
Wow, 180 unread books??? Guess you need never complain about having nothing to read!
