5 stars - a wonderful period drama packed full of mystery
The Sound of Butterflies is about…
A butterfly enthusiastic who joins an expedition to the Amazon in search of a mysterious butterfly and returns home a changed man.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this novel but within minutes I found myself caught up in a mysterious period drama. The story opens in Richmond in May 1904 with Sophia arriving at the train station to meet her much-loved husband who has been away in the Amazon jungle on the search for a mysterious butterfly. When she sees Thomas on the platform she is shocked to find herself looking at a stranger; in the place of her strong and handsome husband is a withered man who appears to be mute.
In the next chapter the story shifts back in time to October 1903 as Thomas writes a letter to Sophia telling her about the journey to Brazil and the four fellows he will be travelling with on his exploration.
As the novel unfolds, time shifts back and forth between Sophia in the present and Thomas in the past, as we find out more about Thomas’ experiences in the jungle and how Sophia copes with his strange illness back home. King does an excellent job of weaving a tale of mystery and intrigue, with believable characters and many twists and turns that keep you guessing at the final outcome. Once I started reading I was completely drawn in and couldn’t put the book down.
This novel is beautifully written and I could easily imagine myself in 1900’s Richmond with Sophia or battling through the hot and humid jungle with Thomas. As I was reading I thought that this would be a very fitting tale for a sumptuous period drama, perhaps with Keira Knightly as the patient but concerned Sophia. However, as events begin to unfold towards the middle of the novel there are some unpleasant scenes of violence and molestation which I’m not sure I could stomach if portrayed on the big screen.
The Sound of Butterflies is an opulent and intriguing tale which I highly recommend; and with a debut as compelling as this I can’t wait to see what King has to offer next.
