Sunday Salon | Midnight Sun Draft fiasco and Library Thing

Morning Saloners - it’s been a busy week here though I haven’t read as much as I would have liked.

I’ve discovered a new Wordpress plugin that gives you live stats on your site - and it’s been quite eye opening. Yesterday was my busiest day on the site ever - because an article I posted yesterday ranked number 2 in Google for the search term Midnight Sun Draft. While I’m excited to have got to such a high position in Google I’m also dissapointed at the sheer number of people seeking out this draft. Of course, as I said in my article yesterday, questions are being asked about whether this was really a leak, or a clever publicity stunt - it’s certainly generating a lot of traffic and discussion all over the Internet.

I’ve also spent a bit of time trying to find my way around Library Thing - I profess to be quite advanced at all things Internet related but this site has me baffled - the usability experience is awful. I wanted to post a review of Jemima J. and must have spent 15 mintues clicking around and round until I finally saw a little link that allowed me to post. Do you think I could find it again for the next book? Nope. So I gave up. I’ve heard great things about LT so I’m willing to try again but I need some help - if you are a user can you post a comment and let me know what to do please - I need a dummies guide! I’d love to know more than just posting a review - what kind of functionality is there? Where are the good groups to join? How do I make the most of my membership? Please share your pearls of wisdom for me :)

Oh and don’t forget that today is the last day to enter the Matrimony signed paperback giveaway - head over to this post and leave a comment by midnight tonight (GMT) and I’ll draw the winner tomorrow.

Now I’m off out for lunch with my parents - Happy Sunday y’all.

I gave up on the Library Thing as too complicated… So I’m afraid no help there. Enjoy your lunch!

Hi Mrs. S.,

Thought I’d pipe in here about The Library Thing. I recently signed up as well. I’ve been a member of Goodreads for about a year and I found Library Thing to be very confusing compared to Goodreads. I’m slowly learning how things work, but it isn’t anywhere near as self-explanatory as Goodreads. The other thing I like about Goodreads is that if one of my “friends” rates or reviews a book, I receive an e-mail notice…also if they send me a message. I don’t have to go checking around all over the place. This has helped me find books I wouldn’t have otherwise known about - ones I certainly wouldn’t have gone LOOKING for.

There may be many benefits to Library Thing I haven’t yet discovered, but I have to say at this point Goodreads is far better for my reading needs!

I’m an LT user and I don’t consider myself especially gifted technically. To edit anything in your library (including posting a review or rating a book), simply click on the little pencil graphic on the far right side of the page of the book in question. There are lots and lots of wonderful groups on LT…you can check them out without joining them simply by clicking on the tab for groups at the top of the page.

I think if you just spend a little time clicking on the different tabs, you will learn your way around. There is tons of functionality at LT which is why it seems hard at first…but once you learn it you’ll wonder how you lived with out it!

I had the same experience with LibraryThing. I don’t think that it is very user friendly. Remember to use the pencil link! I’m finally to the point where I can find my way around, by I infinitely prefer goodreads. I use Library Thing for the books I own, and goodreads for the books I’ve read, am reading, and want to read.

Can I ask what the Wordpress plugin you refer to above is? I’d love to try it out. Thanks!

Hi Jessica - thanks for the tip - I keep meaning to explore good reads too. The plugin is called Wordpress Stats - you can search for it in the WP plugin library. It’s fabulous!
