5 stars - A powerful tale of destiny and family history
Description
On the night that Arlyn Singer’s fater dies, she is certain her destiny will find her. Some hours later a young man shows up at her door. Lost in a strange town, John Moody is an architectural student, serious, reserved, and deliberate. And he has no inkling that the tall, red-haired girl whom he has asked for directions will haunt him for the rest of his life.

The Book Review
It seems that every time I say I’ve uncovered the best book for 2008 an even better one comes along! This is the first Hoffman novel that I have read - and it was breath taking.
The prose is powerful, and almost lyrical, as we follow the lives of Arlyn and her family; from the fateful night that she relies on destiny and meets John Moody - the man who will become her husband - through the years as she realises perhaps she didn’t choose the right destiny - and the impact this has on her family.
In a tale woven with fairy tales of people who can grow wings and fly away, Hoffman reveals how each character feels trapped by the hand that fate has dealt them; from a fated marriage, to a forbidden love affair, a long kept secret to drug-fuelled self-destruction.
This is a beautiful story that will have you hooked from the opening line, and I highly recommend you read it.
