Weekly Geeks | Storytelling
By Mrs S • May 25th, 2008 • Category: Weekly GeeksThis week’s challenge:
Guten Tag, Weekly Geeks! This week’s theme was suggested by Renay. She says, “I thought it would be cool to ask people to talk about other forms of story-telling.”
I’ve missed the last couple of challenges as they required me to stop and think - I gave myself the excuse that I was too busy - when in actual fact I was just too lazy to think!
So this week I decided that I would take part however taxing the challenge… I wasn’t sure where to go with this one - Becky has shared her thoughts on Stargate so I thought about writing about my favourite tv show, then I considered the lyrics of a great song - and then I wrote the title of the post and it hit me… what is the form of storytelling that I partake in as my other hobby? Digital Scrapbooking! Heck I even call my site Storytelling so this one should fit.
So why do I digi-scrap?
I stumbled upon it quite by accident a few years ago, probably via twopeasinabucket.com. My first major project was a photo album of scrapped pages of our vow renewal ceremony as a birthday gift for my mother-in-law. Since then I have made four more books (mostly of our Disney vacations) and am currently working on an album of our wedding photographs.
I use Photoshop CS3 and treated myself to a 24″ iMac for my birthday last year so that I can actually see what I’m working on!
I’ve always been a big fan of photographs - and since I got my first digital camera will quite happily take hundreds if not thousands of photos while on holiday. Printing them out and sticking them in a photo album just doesn’t seem to cut it anymore! I like to take a photo and tell the story behind it, using scrapping elements and journalling. I have such a bad memory that in the space of a few years a photograph on its own will mean nothing to me - I need a way to remember the story.
I’m pretty much self-taught although I have taken a couple of classes at jessicasprague.com which I can highly recommend. I like to look back over my pages and see how my design and storytelling skills have grown over the years.
This last Christmas I made some 12×12 pages as gifts for my family and had them framed - they looked great and went down a storm.
Here’s some examples of my favourite pages:

Wow! Your digital scrapbooking is great!

Wow! Your layouts are beautiful!!! I’ve never tried digital scrapbooking. I love playing with paper and embellishments and having a big old mess all over my scrapbook table. Oh o.k., o.k., while that is true, the real reason I’ve never tried digital scrapbooking is because it intimidates the heck out of me! I am so technologically challenged, I feel grateful that I can manage to turn on my computer at times
Anyway, lovely post! And now I’m off to click on the link to see more of your layouts…

I just got into digi-scraping via a friend of mine and I’m not sure what I think yet. I’ve been doing scrapbooking for years now, but since I got pregnant, I can never find the time to get all of the stuff out, so this seemed like a good way to do it. I’m currently working on getting all of my 2006 pictures in something and since all of hte pictures are already digital, this works out great. But I’m still not sure how to get them printed.

Although I haven’t done anything much lately, I love scrapbooks. I started with digital and will stay with digital and I love being able to undo what I’ve done without needing to work with glue and things like that. I’m in awe of people who paper scrap as it seems it must be much harder to change your mind and do something differently.

What a beautiful sentiment. It reflects the detail and care in your work. I especially like “Hand Blessing” Thanks for sharing.
Also - thanks for the tip about Google Reader…
@all - thanks for the kind words everyone *blush*
I have tried paper scrapping but I’m just not cut out for it - and I have such envy for those who can make paper layouts look beautiful - for me the undo button in photshop is often my saviour *lol*
@Kerry & @Jackie - great pages! Thanks for sharing
