Aside | RSS Awareness Day - May 1, 2008

Posted by: Clare Swindlehurst In: Asides

How do you keep up with your favourite blogs? Do you list them in your favourites or your own blogroll and check them all regularly? Do you find that some of the sites you check haven’t updated, or worst still that you’ve missed a great contest because you didn’t visit regularly enough?

There is an easier way to keep up with your favourite bloggers -and that is by using RSS. Every good blog should feature an RSS feed on their site so you can sign up - usually it’s a button that looks like this. RSS

To sign up for the feed you simply click on the button and follow the instructions.

In order to read the feeds you need a feed reader or an aggregator - my personal favourite is Google Reader. As you subscribe to new feeds Google manages them for you - checking each site for the latest post and delivering them to the Reader. You then have all of your favourite blogs in one place - you don’t have to go to them to check for updates, the updates come to you!

You can find out more about RSS and how it can change your blog reading habits for the better at rssday.org - May 1 has been declared RSS Awareness Day, if you don’t already use RSS then why not schedule some time on May 1 to visit your favourite sites and sign up for their feeds.

While you’re here why not make a start by subscribing to my site updates!

There are two ways that you can keep up to date with the latest reviews and and you’re more than welcome to pick either (or both) of them.

RSS Feed

RSSYou can receive updates in your feed reader by subscribing to my RSS feed. You’ll be notified every time I publish a new review.

Email Subscription

Email

Don’t worry if you’re not an RSS user - you can subscribe to have an email delivered directly to your inbox when I publish a new review. You can unsubsribe from this service at any time.

My email subscription service is provided by a third party (Feedburner) and you can subscribe to it here.

Please note - your privacy is assured with any of the above options. I do not use your details for any other purposes and details are kept private.

Ha ha! I recently made the switch to google reader and I love it! But, I think some people go overboard with their subscriptions (over 400!!!). I keep mine low, but I try try try to visit regularly to the blogs I read. I’m not sure how people can keep up with so many blogs!

Man, I love Google Reader. Before I stayed in my LJ bubble because I never had time to browse through all the blogs I want ed to read. I was watching around ten sites and it would take me an hour to check them. Now I’m watching around 300 and it takes me ten minutes a day.

Although I think my experience with my LJ friends page has made me pretty successful at skimming and therefore reading more blogs, since that page is pretty much the same as an RSS feed and I’ve never had less than 20 friends from the moment I signed up for my LJ account.

I would never have been to read all the book blogs I do without RSS! Five thumbs up!

Hey Trish and Renay - glad to have some other RSS advocates promoting the cause - I don’t know how I kept up with people before Google Reader - I have no idea how many blogs I follow but it’s definitely more than I could without RSS!
